The Northern Circuit is the newest and longest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins in the West at the Londorossi Gate and follows the same path as the Lemosho route for the first two days. After crossing the Shira plateau the path veers north near Lava Tower, following the longer Northern Circuit instead of the more popular Southern Circuit via Barranco Valley The route circles around the quieter northern slopes to the east side of the mountain. The Northern Circuit is longer than the other trails on Kilimanjaro, taking a minimum of eight or nine days to complete. The eight-day trek skips the additional acclimatization day that is usually spent at Shira Camp 2 and continues straight on to Moir Camp.

Tour Itinerary

We have carefully planned out each day to give you the best possible experience. From exploring historic landmarks to tasting delicious local cuisine, each day is packed with adventure and excitement. Join us as we take you on a journey through some of the most fascinating destinations in the world.

  • 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft, 4 miles, approx. 3-4 hours

After breakfast in your hotel you will be given an overall briefing from your guide. At 9am you will be met by our staff, who will drive you several hours to the Western side of Mt. Kilimanjaro and to the Londrossi Gate, where our guides and porters will prepare and pack the equipment and supplies Once at the gate you will be given a packed lunch and after registration with the Kilimanjaro Park office, we will drive for another 45mins to Lemosho Glades where your trek will begin with ascending into the rainforest. You will ascend for approx. 3 hours in dense rain forest which could be very wet and muddy so be ready with your gaiters and trekking poles. During the trek we will have a break and you can enjoy the rest your packed lunch. We will reach the Mti Mkubwa Camp also known as ‘Big Tree’ Camp in late afternoon. After arrival, you will be taken to your camp and tent which has already been set up by the porters who ran ahead, where you will be greeted with boiled drinking water and hot washing water. Once you have freshened up and settled in, a hot dinner will be served in the mess-tent..

  • 9,498 ft to 11,500 ft, 5 miles, approx. 5-6 hours

From the forested slopes of Lemosho you ascend through a podocarpus and juniper forest and then break out on to a zone of heather and lichen-draped volcanic rock and the Shira Plateau, which used to be Kilimanjaro’s third peak before it collapsed. Lunch is taken on the trail and you arrive in camp mid-afternoon. The view of Kibo (the peak of Kilimanjaro) is breathtaking from this vantage point. Overnight at Shira 1 Camp.

  • Altitude gained: 657m

A long trek heading east which passes through the ‘Garden of the Senecios’ and then enters the high alpine desert zone. The morning is spent trekking up to Lava Tower and the iconic Shark’s Tooth rock formation at 4,600 meters, where you will have lunch. After lunch, you will join the northern circuit heading down to Moir Camp at 4,161 meters (see map above). This is an important day in your trek as you will get to experience high altitude and then sleep low, which is good for the acclimatization process.

  • Distance: ~ 9.8km / 6.1 miles
  • Trekking time: 5-7 hours
  • Zone: Low alpine zone / High alpine zone
  • Altitude loss: 122m

Today it involves a moderately steep climb out of Moir Valley. Trekkers can take a small detour here to climb the summit of Little Lent Hill at 4,375 meters before returning to the Northern Circuit trail. From here the route follows a series of inclines and declines, skirting around the northern slopes of Kibo to Buffalo Camp (4,033 meters). The trek gives great vistas out across the plains that lie north of Kilimanjaro and stretch out to the Kenyan / Tanzanian border. You will arrive at Buffalo Camp just after midday, where you will have lunch and have time to rest after a long day hiking.

  • Altitude lost: 97m

Starts with a climb up the Buffalo Ridge and down into Pofu Camp where lunch is usually served. The route then continues east around the northern slopes to the Rongai Third Cave at 3,936 meters. The trek is shorter than the day before and by now you should be feeling well acclimatized to the altitude. You will arrive at the Third Cave just around mid-afternoon.

  • Altitude gained: 781m

Today it involves a steady incline up and over the Saddle which sits between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi Peak. Trekkers then continue walking south-west up to School Hut (4,800 meters). After arriving at School Hut you will be served an early dinner and then you should get some shut-eye as you will be awoken before midnight to start your summit attempt. Remember to prepare all your gear, including warm clothes, insulated water bottles, snacks, headlamp, and camera before going to bed.

  • Altitude gained: 1178m
  • Altitude lost: 2068m (descent)

You will be awoken around 11:30 with hot tea and biscuits and will then begin the steep incline up to the slopes of Kibo under the cover of darkness. Your first check-point is Hans Meyer Cave where you will take a short break. The climb steepens as you approach Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters), which will be around 5-6 hours after departing School Hut. Take a moment to enjoy the approaching dawn and incredible view out and across to Mawenzi Peak, but remember you still have 2 hours trekking to reach Uhuru Peak so dig deep for the energy. The slope flattens as you head west around the crater rim and you should arrive at the summit at or just after sunrise.

Your stay here will be brief so get as many pictures as you can of the incredible views and surrounding glaciers. You will then retrace your steps back around the crater rim to Stella Point (5,739 meters) where you will turn south and head down the heavily screed slopes of Kibo to Barafu Camp (4,680 meters). Most trekkers take a short break here before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,950 meters) for your final night on the mountain. In total, you will be trekking for 14-16 hours on day eight so it is important to pace yourself, remain hydrated and keep your blood sugar levels up. Note: some tour operators return via Gilman’s Point to Horombo Hut using the Marangu Route.

You will be awoken around 11:30 with hot tea and biscuits and will then begin the steep incline up to the slopes of Kibo under the cover of darkness. Your first check-point is Hans Meyer Cave where you will take a short break. The climb steepens as you approach Gilman’s Point (5,681 meters)

  • Altitude lost: 2194m

After breakfast and a heartfelt ceremony of appreciation and team bonding with your crew, it’s time to say goodbye. We continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. As the weather is drastically warmer, the terrain is wet, muddy and steep and we highly recommend Gaiters and trekking poles. From the gate, a vehicle will meet you at Mweka village to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 30 minutes). Enjoy a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations!!

Serengeti with Shimboni is an unforgettable experience Three amazing days in Serengeti, with a beautiful landscape and impressive wildlife. I told Victor that I would like to see the big cats and in, the very first afternoon, we saw cheetah, leopard and lion. Over the three days we also spotted baby cheetah, baby leopard and many baby lions. Victor also selected a wonderful camp to spend the nights, with incredible food. And he made sure that I had coffee every single moment I will never forget these days in Serengeti with Shimboni Africa tours.

Great Local Oganizer, Friendly ,safe and Memorable Experience with Family Our tour to Moshi Village was a fantastic experience from start to finish. It began with a convenient meet-up at our hotel in Moshi Town, where Victor, our guide, greeted us warmly. The journey was incredibly smooth, as navigating the public transport was easy and well-organized. I especially enjoyed taking the local buses, which added a nice, authentic touch to the experience. The pace of the tour was perfect, making it a relaxing day despite all there was to see. As a small group, we had plenty of time to enjoy each stop without feeling rushed. One highlight was definitely the Materuni Waterfall—such a serene and beautiful place that left a lasting impression on all of us. We thank Victor and the Shimbon Africa Tours team for organizing an amazing day trip for my family, it was a great time to share the culture with the local people of the village from coffee making to local food.Victor was an excellent and knowledgeable guide, He explained to us about the flora and fauna of the place, the history of the Chagga tribe, the people who live on the slope of Mt Kilimanjaro, and their adaptation to coffee farming. He was always attentive and full of interesting tidbits, especially for my kids, who were engaged and excited throughout the tour. It was clear that he genuinely cared about making the experience enjoyable for everyone. Overall, this was a memorable, stress-free day trip, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tanzania.

Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro and Serengeti - a superb experience! In October 2023 my son and I made a combined trip with Shimboni Africa Tours. We climbed the Kilimanjaro and made a Safari to the Ngorongoro Crater and to the Serengeti. For us every part of the trip was wonderful. We started with an acclimatization day at the Shimbwe Medows Lodge in Shimbwe Village. This gave us time to prepare for the Kilimanjaro. Also we got the opportunity to make an easy hike to the Materuni Waterfall and to get an impression of life in a Tanzanian village. We were very happy to enjoy the hospitality and kindness of Victor and his team at Shimbwe Meadows Lodge. The accommodation was very pleasant and quiet with a stunning view on Mount Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Also the food was delicious. I especially liked the oyster -nut-sauce which I never hat tasted before. For our Kilimanjaro tour we chose the Lemosho Route (8-day-trip). This proved to be a very good choice because on one hand it gave us enough time for acclimatization. On the other hand we had plenty of time to enjoy the magnificent and unique landscape at Kilimanjaro Nationalpark. All in all the tour was very well organized. The equipmet provided was just right for our needs and the crew was very kind and helpful an any time. Our guide Vicent and our assistant guide Revocatus were always ready to answer any question and to give us helpful instructions. With their help we successfully reached the summit. Thank you so much!Because we had some more days for our vacation we also went on safari to Ngorongoro Crater and to the Serengeti. Here we stayed in tents in the middle of nature and saw plenty of wildlife – the big 5 in only 2 days!We had memorable encounters with a great variety of African animals and made magnificent photos. Our very experienced English and German speaking guide Jimmy helped us a great deal to find the animals in the wilderness. Also on the financial side everything went well and without any problems. We payed half of the trip in advance and half of it cash on arrival. When we were on our Kilimanjaro-trip Victor kept the money that we brought to Tanzania and some of our camera-equipment safely in his house so we didn’t have to worry about anything.I would definitely recommend Victor and his team at Shimboni Africa Tours to anyone who would like to make a trip to Tanzania. Thank you for this magnificent experience!Read more

Do not miss this authentic coffee farm experience! We remember our trip to this coffee farm as a highlight of our trip to Tanzania July 2024! The tour was unique and unlike anything we could experience in the USA. The lunch after at the hotel was one of the best meals we had in Africa. If you find yourself in the area, do not miss this tour! Victor grew up in the house that is now the beautiful hotel, and his knowledge of the area enhanced our visit. We wish him much luck in educating visitors, through this tour, about this authentic coffee farm experience.

The trip of a lifetime! Here is a suggestion for your comment:---It is often said that Africa is an incomparable continent, leaving an indelible mark. And for me, Tanzania was the embodiment of that. I was deeply and positively taken by this country of exceptional human, animal and natural wealth, which I named “HUMANIMALITY” – an intense encounter with nature and humans in all their splendor. This trip, this dream inscribed on my Bucket list, is an experience to live to the fullest, and this is what SHIMBONI AFRICA TOURùs allows. Thanks to Victor, its owner, and his extraordinary team, every moment was marked with serenity, thanks to their expertise, competence, and unfailing kindness. Their professionalism and constant concern for our safety and well-being allowed me to live a unique and unforgettable trip.I can only warmly recommend SHIMBONI AFRICA TOURS for an exceptional African adventure. A huge thank you to them for this trip of a lifetime!
